Above and beyond the emotional and physical benefits of shiatsu during pregnancy, treatment is an opportunity to slow down and connect with yourself and your baby. This is something I put a lot of emphasis on.
The more I see women connected to themselves, their bodies, their breath and their babies, the more I see women having the birth experiences they envision for themselves, and the strength to recover more quickly and enjoy motherhood.
Often I incorporate stretching, breathing, relaxation exercises and nutritional recommendations into my treatments for pregnancy. Many women find a combination of some or all of these helps keep them feeling well, and helps them move beyond back pain, insomnia, or morning sickness, if they are experiencing it. All of these elements also strengthen the prospect of a natural labour without medications or interventions, if that’s what you choose.
During the postnatal stage, women continue to experience hormonal and other shifts in their bodies. For a new mom, shiatsu helps to balance out these shifts by strengthening the connection between mind and body, and by increasing immune function and energy levels.
Shiatsu treatments take place in your own home so you can relax and not have to worry about child care or transportation. Many new moms like to enjoy a treatment while lying with baby – breastfeeding or cuddling a napping babes.
Aside from my initial training in Zen Shiatsu here in Toronto in 2006, I continue to study with Suzanne Yates, an internationally renowned UK practitioner and author specializing in shiatsu for childbirth educators, doulas and midwives. To learn more about Suzanne Yates: www.wellmother.org.
